Europa Report: A Quick Review

“What is your opinion on the 2013 science fiction movie Europa Report?”

The soundtrack was excellent and the reason I checked the movie out…

The film itself…?

Creepy as hell, even though it didn’t really set out to be.

I have had an ongoing issue with the whole sci-fi/thriller/horror genre ever since I saw “Alien” in the theater when I was 5. I mean, who in their right mind brings a damn FIVE YEAR OLD to see that movie?

My family, that’s who.

I’m 45 now, and I can honestly say that I have never seen that movie all the way through.

Getting back to “Europa Report,” the premise of the film explored the possibility of life on one of Jupiter’s moons – the same one which was the topic of Arthur C. Clarke’s 2010 (both the film and the movie). This more modern take does a phenomenal job of storytelling: it establishes the premise, builds the characters, gradually ratchets up the tension, and concludes solidly. One point of interest was learning about coloboma due to the close-ups of Karolina Wydra’s eyes… but I digress (happily).

…But did it freak me out?

I can’t lie – I skipped through most of the movie to get the overall gist that, in its entirety, I would be found hiding under the laminate flooring… and this coming from someone who has seen combat, been on night dives in the ocean, and is generally more annoyed with things than afraid of them.

…Still, though… amazing soundtrack.
