Battlestar Galactica and Faith

“Did the re-imagination of Battlestar Galactica (2008) cross the line of Science Fiction and religion?”

I’m sitting here trying to understand/figure out what line – if any – was crossed by the writers of BSG.

If this line was the delineation between the story and the incorporation of faith, then they weren’t the only ones; the central theme of the Star Wars universe is the Jedi order — a monastic organization that could be interpreted as a cult in relation to the rest of the worlds.

If the boundary is more rooted in reality with folks like yours truly who often makes annoying parallels between story and real life, then yep. However, my son does the same thing with Star Wars and I know people who do similar things with Star Trek, Babylon 5, or a huge list of well-written science fiction.

My own personal perspective on BSG and faith is that the seamless incorporation of several distinct aspects made it so intriguing. Man versus man… man versus God (or Gods)… man versus society… all the major conflicts in writing are there and part of a larger larger discussion around faith and the motivation, justification, criticism, and overall involvement in what it means to be a questioning and conflicted sentient being.

(A bit stilted due to a toddler, but hopefully you get my point)
