Oh, this is a good question and the answer has been on my mind a lot, lately.
“In A Moment” by the Stereophonics:
Don’t know where you’re going
Used to be a star
And everywhere you turn
They’re raining on your fire
You’re searching for an answer
Your hands and tongue are tied
And everything that you thought you knew
Is buried deep alive
If you follow this blog and/or my answers on Quora, you know that I am a retired UH-60 crew chief. My professional life for much of those 20 years was as a Standardization Instructor, and much of that time was spent being a subject matter expert on a wide variety of topics. Aircraft systems, and medical topics, doctrine, fundamentals of instruction… All of it valuable to my career and role as a mentor; all of it somewhat useless when I received my DD 214.
I’m looking in the mirror
I’m talking to myself
Stare at my reflection
And I look like someone else
Ask myself a question
Can I face another day?
So I look myself out in the eyes
And I tell myself again
Since I retired, I have often found myself wondering if those 20 years was just imagined. The purpose I once had was gone, so what else is there?
You could take tomorrow
If you wanna
You should take tomorrow
But you gotta wanna
The beauty of this song (and video) is that it is about rediscovery and re-purposing. Re-framing identity and finding that spark… that curiosity. There was a quote that popped up on Facebook which makes sense:
“You’ve made it this far to not just make it this far.”
Everything that yesterday was was a stepping stone to what tomorrow can be.
You just gotta wanna.
As for how I discovered it, the Stereophonics have been a favorite ever since I discovered them in an episode of “Rescue Me.” Deep, dark, and optimistic in a visceral sense.

I suppose it was more the running – like 10-15 miles a day – that did it more than the song, but the song I listened to the most while I was running was “Suffer in Silence” by Apotygma Berserk…
