Why is the Great Patriotic War (the Eastern Front in WWII) something important to learn about?

There was a quote I had come across in my travels which summarized the spirit of my brief answer quite well:

History is the best form of early-warning.

I have NO idea where that quote came from – otherwise I would maintain my consistency for labeling sources. It rings true… to a certain extent, however.

History never truly repeats itself – there are too many variables which lead up to an event for anything to be an exact copy of events which preceded the present (or future).

Going off the top of my head:

  • the emphasis on numerical superiority over effective doctrine…
  • technologically advanced units pitted against numerical superiority (again)…
  • the perils of coercive civilian leadership against realistic military leadership…
  • the importance of effective alliances…
  • the importance of discipline in the combatant/noncombatant interactions…
  • logistics…
  • intelligence…

All of these may or may not be expanded upon further at a later point, but you get the idea. One could look at any of the above points from the German or Soviet side and after much research, could end up with a semester or two of quality material.
