Combat tends to bring out some the more creative uses for equipment, and tanks-turned-artillery fits that old adage of “if it looks stupid but it works, it isn’t stupid.”

For the most part, I agree with many of the previous answers along the lines that “artillery is for indirect fire…” and I also agree that the rounds from, say, a T-55 pictured above, would not be as effective as a round or rocket from a dedicated platform…
However, it is possible to use a tank as mobile artillery, just like it is possible to use artillery for anti-aircraft roles. Even trebuchets and slingshots have shown up in modern use in places like Syria.

Sure. Personally, I would not want to be on the first two ridges to test the effectiveness, but that is just me.
