This is a nice break from the routine questions found here on Quora…

Cain was not a complete idiot. She was ruthless, conniving, and driven… but she was not stupid. As demented and flawed as her character was, she understood loyalty, motivation, and motives far better than most characters.
That being said, I would venture to guess that she had figured that Starbuck and Adama were up to something. While she probably didn’t figure out exactly what, it would be a fair assumption that she had deduced that Adama’s weakness for the “moral right” would clash with her attitude of “Machiavellian right” sooner or later, and that Starbuck would be a key player in that game.
Cain was a Tauron, which, thanks to “Caprica,” we get a better idea of their cultural philosophies on loyalty and Tauron-versus-Tauron aggression. Power is a dangerous and effective tool… but power wielded vicariously is even more potent, in this case: “When the time comes, I expect you not to flinch.” Translation: “You are going to have to make a choice on who is your master; there can only be one master of you… and that ain’t you.”
Yeah. She knew – and that’s what makes her character so insidiously fascinating.
