(The following is an email to Donald Jones of Net Talon, sent February 24, 2018. The conversation is ongoing, and an “effort is underway”… Meanwhile, I am going to pursue my own efforts.)
Mr. Jones,
I recently came across an article describing the services your company had provided in making Southwestern High School, and I found the concept fascinating enough to incorporate it into a recent blog post.
As I considered it a bit more today in discussion with a co-worker, I brought up the issue of funding to ensure a safer environment for all children; such a financial obstacle is formidable and seemingly unrealistic, I agree, but I am a closet optimist.
What I’d like you to consider is an interesting option: why not start a campaign with the NRA and the major media outlets to “make it happen.”
(Forgive me for switching to an informal, and conversational tone from this point on…)
The original idea was that it would be a great thing, if I were in a leadership position with the NRA, to steer the effort (and optics, honestly) of that organization in a better direction. By committing to match, dollar for dollar, any contributions of the major networks and their parent organizations, the issue of funding more schools to follow Southwestern’s lead might be substantially negated. After all, a public declaration from one would challenge the other to reciprocate, correct?
The events in Florida on February 14th were tragic, and the inevitable politicization of the issue has been predictable and reprehensible… but it seems like nothing will come of the constant bickering and whatnot in the media or from the spokespersons. Why not propose a direction that might bring something positive?
Originally, I was going to approach the NRA with this idea – however naive and/or optimistic it may be. However, your company has been key in the solution for one school… and it is part of your personal goal: “to ensure that every school, every teacher, and every child are equally protected.” Therefore, contacting you made much more sense in an effort to actually do something, rather than be part of the din of opinion on social media or personal blogs.
Again, my approach may be considered a bit opportunistic – for that I apologize. I see a chance to promote an idea, create/execute a solution, and get the major actors in the arena of public opinion to be put in the difficult position (for them) to “walk the walk” as opposed to the routine of “talk.”
Thank you for your efforts in safety and your time/consideration. I wish the best for you and Net Talon in your efforts to continue to make a difference…
